Updated: May 6

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to be interviewed by Bold Journey on the topic Tactics & Strategies for Keeping Your Creativity Strong.

Luisa, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

Humans are inherently creative, that is a fact. I believe we channel our creative efforts based on our preferences and natural inclinations. But how do we ignite it? I don’t think creativity is something that strikes you; rather, it’s something we actively seek and continually nourish with inputs and outputs. Have you ever noticed that the more you create, the more ideas you start to have?

To keep creativity alive, one must consistently seek inspiration with intent, explore diverse subjects, actively engage with what’s available, and strive to inject innovation into the mix.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m Luisa or Luma, as some friends call me. I am a jewelry artist based in New York City. In my recent work, I’ve been delving into my journey with bipolar disorder and ADHD, channeling these experiences into my art. My current passion lies in the craft of wire crochet, through which I fashion intricate pieces with a delicate and ethereal aesthetic. I view wire crochet as a form of meditation, offering solace and introspection. It serves as a platform to advocate for mental health awareness, using my creations to spark meaningful conversations.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Firstly, curiosity has played a significant role. Maintaining a sense of curiosity has driven me to explore new ideas, concepts, and perspectives. It has fueled my desire to learn and grow, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and opening doors to new opportunities.

Secondly, taking an interdisciplinary approach as a lifestyle has been instrumental. Embracing this mindset has allowed me to bridge gaps between different fields of study, enabling me to see connections where others may not.

Lastly, effective communication has been crucial in my journey. Whether it’s conveying ideas, collaborating with others, or presenting my work, strong communication skills have been essential. Clear and concise communication not only facilitates understanding but also fosters meaningful connections and collaborations with others.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I find it helpful to take a step back and pause, simply changing the activity. This isn’t about avoidance, but rather giving myself a moment to regroup and reassess the situation. By taking a break from the particular thought or activity that’s causing stress, I can gain perspective and approach it with a clearer mind when I return a few moments or days later.

Additionally, as someone with ADHD, I’ve learned the importance of using lists as a practical strategy. Lists provide a structured framework that helps me prioritize and see the tasks I want to tackle. Breaking down overwhelming tasks into smaller, manageable steps allows me to approach them one at a time, reducing the feeling of being overwhelmed.
